Chapter Sixteen

I raised my rifle. Reaver saw the motion, and for a moment, I wondered what her reaction would be. If anyone else had been watching, it would have looked like I was about to shoot my friend, my lover, my companion. She saw it for what it truly was though, and tucked herself into a roll.

The harbinger that had been closing on her fired three grenades onto the ground where she’d been standing. It appeared to have been aiming for the back of her knees. I wondered if the queen had found another flaw in the armor, but there wasn’t time to find out. Not yet.

I pulled the trigger, turning the bug’s head into a smoking stump. Bits of the bug were scattered on the ground next to its body, which took a half-second to realize it was no longer receiving signals on how and when to move. It hit the ground a second later.

Reaver, meanwhile, began firing her rifle as she walked steadily toward a group of soldiers battling some Xeno further down the street.

At the same time, I heard a bug approaching from behind. The queen was getting clever. That wasn’t a good thing for most of the soldiers. It meant we’d have more casualties. But for me, it wasn’t a problem.

The bugs that attacked me didn’t have rifles. They looked like they were going to use their claws to extract me from my armor like toothpaste from a tube. The first lost its head and crashed to the ground next to me. The second lost one of its left arms, quickly followed by one of its right arms.

I placed my palm on its thorax to keep it in place as I whipped my sword left then right, removing all its legs, after which all it could do was wiggle. I checked my surroundings, and having no bugs within range, turned to the Xeno in front of me.

If the creature was feeling any pain, it didn’t display any signs of it. The thing’s mandibles snapped and ground together as it attempted to bite me—the last-ditch effort of a bug who had no chance of killing anyone. I brought the creature close and stared hard into its buggy eyes. I wanted to make sure I had the queen’s attention before I spoke. I knew she was commanding her troops and looking through their eyes. I was also certain she could hear and understand me.

“Your kind is no longer welcome in this galaxy,” I said. “Your kind has murdered countless millions on countless worlds, and today is the first day of your gradual but swift downfall. I will wipe your entire species out of existence. No place is safe. You can’t hide anywhere. You never had a chance at winning.”

I almost laughed when I felt a wave of rage wash over me from somewhere below. The queen had indeed been watching. Not only that, but she’d understood. And angry opponents made mistakes. Her first mistake had been invading this planet.
